Joe Patrick Marshall Interview

To Feed the Roses is a new play by Amy Losi that will premiere at esteemed American Theatre of Actors.  The play will run from September 13th-September 24th.  In To Feed the Roses, an older couple reunite in what could be a humorous love story — if only the secrets of their past didn’t get in the way!  We were delighted to chat with multi-hyphenate artist Joe Patrick Marshall about acting and this wonderful production.

Joe Patrick Marshall loves New York City so much he has been filling it with art for years.  “My name is Joe Patrick Marshall, and I am an actor, director and film producer living and working here in New York city. I am a proud Native New Yorker.”

Every artist uses a creative process to bring artistic creations to life.  Mr. Marshall keeps the playwright strongly in mind as he executes his process.   I “start to create a character with a backstory. From there it can go in many different directions before it becomes solidified. That development will include slowly stepping out and looking back to almost witness the character move and speak as I try to mold him to what I think the playwright envisioned in combination with my own choices.  This creative process may or may not consist of drawing from my own life experiences, but it will consist of using my own intuition, imagination and instincts to interpret and honor the story the playwright is trying to tell. The other part of that process is to always be prepared.”

When people come to the ATA, they have such a positive experience that they tend to do more than one production there.  It’s a wonderful and supportive place where artists of all types grow and thrive.  Mr. Marshall has had a long and happy association with them. “ I have been acting at the ATA either as a student or a professional since 2007 and it has been place of inspiration for me.  One of my all time joys as an actor was being directed by James Jennings in a production of “Hamlet” in 2022. The ATA is a New York city treasure.”

Next up Mr. Marshall will go from stage to screen, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he will return to the ATA for another production sometime in the future.  “Next for me after Feed The Roses I will be focusing on a Fall release for a film called “Stream” that I am involved in as Executive Producer.”

Everything’s coming up roses at the American Theatre of Actors!
