Jim Catapano reviews Three Sisters and an Act of Sibling Sabotage

How to Break Up a Wedding Is a Hilarious “Don’t Try This at Home” Tale

Written with wit and directed with flair by Katharine McNair, How to Break Up a Wedding is a classic buddy comedy; despite the deviousness the title suggests, it stays light and delightfully funny throughout.

We’re first introduced to Margaret (Sophia Jaeger), a free live-for today spirit. “I like barbecue, beer and babes” she proudly announces to us, “though not necessarily in that order”!

She recruits her sisters—beach- and Chardonnay-loving, recently divorced Julie (Gretchen Poole); and Tonya (Elle Nelson), a quiet-living mom—to stop their kid brother Tommy (Steven Isaac Rice) from entering into what she perceives to be a marital misfire with his partner Keri (Rebecca Kinard). The sisters have profound differences, but unite in their covert mission, snarking all the way. Their mission statement is to be “Clever, Conniving, and Manipulative as Sh-t!” Their diabolical plans include strippers and cocaine, as all good schemes do (Tonya just requests that they don’t risk any jail time).

The quick-witted banter between the catty sisters is hilarious. Along the journey we also meet the Minister, “sweet little Baby Jesus-loving” Charlie (Jared Wilder) and friend Marcos (Serg Lockhart), who join the sisters in the “shade”. To add more absurdity, there’s even a robot servant named Niles (Hila Kramer). As shenanigans ensue and reach further heights, we get a surprise (pretend) audio cameo from a famous musician and weed aficionado. The actors keep things sharp, snappy, and silly as the scheme progresses. The result is a very entertaining, sunny 60 minutes where all ends very well.

How to Break Up a Wedding is presented as a part of the 2024 Fresh Fruit Festival.
