Adam McDowell Navigates Divisive Times in “A House Divided”

Adam McDowell, a Maryland native with a passion for both sports and theatre, is taking on a role that resonates deeply with his own experiences in the new play, “A House Divided.” The play, described as “ripped from the headlines,” tackles the complexities of family and faith in a politically charged environment, a theme that McDowell finds particularly compelling.

“Honestly I feel like I relate to Jimmy a lot,” McDowell explains. “Being a Christian and navigating this political climate the last 10 years of loving each person and standing up for people’s rights has become important. This play turns to how we can love each other even when we are so politically divided.”

McDowell, who moved to New York City to pursue acting at Marymount Manhattan College after growing up in Bel Air, MD, sees the play as an opportunity to explore the power of familial bonds amidst challenging circumstances. “I love family, despite challenges, but it’s beautiful when a family works together, which takes everyone involved and this play reflects just that.”

The play’s subject matter, rooted in contemporary events, brings with it a heightened sense of responsibility. “Yes I do,” McDowell affirms. “I feel like being a part of this play is a way of showing how we as humans can get along and through this process together. This play also gives a voice to those who aren’t getting a loud enough voice in this political climate and that is even more reason to be doing this work.”

Since graduating in 2014, McDowell has steadily built his acting career, and he shares a personal life filled with joy. He’s married to his “beautiful wife, Breanna,” and they share a dog named Fizz. The couple is also eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child, affectionately nicknamed “baby McNugget,” this September.

As for what’s next, McDowell’s focus is firmly on his family. “Next up for the McDowell’s is prepping for baby McNugget’s arrival,” he says. However, his dedication to his craft and his desire to tell stories that matter suggest that audiences can expect to see more of him on stage in the future. In the meantime, “A House Divided” offers a timely and thought-provoking exploration of unity and understanding in a world often defined by division.
