A Review of “A Bronx Tale: The Musical” by the Lighthouse Theatre Company by Tammy Green

Lighthouse Theatre’s latest production of “A Bronx Tale” is a tuneful musical about a young man growing up in the 1960s in a mob-infested Bronx neighborhood.

The enthusiastic ensemble performs this show with energy and heart. Calvin Zanetti plays Caligero, the main character who struggles to remain loyal to his friends and true to his family. Zanetti invites us into the action and is a skillful, likeable performer. His strong numbers include “I Like It – Reprise 1968” and “In A World Like This”.

Sophia McManamon plays an endearing Young Calogero. Tony Chiofalo was convincing as “Sonny”, the tough mob boss with a tender side. Paul Philips as “Lorenzo”, Caligero’s father, had some standout songs that conveyed his deep love for his family. In “Look to Your Heart” and “These Streets”, he brought tears to our eyes, as he tried desperately to persuade his son not to choose a life with the mob.

There were some impressive acrobatic moves in the choreography by Morgan Fay Neuhedel, including a notable split performed by Mackenzie Waite (Dancer/Dance Captain).

“A Bronx Tale”, Lighthouse Theatre’s latest production, is playing August 1-10 at the Bellmore Showplace (222 Pettit Avenue, Bellmore, NY, 11710); and August 15-16 at the Wm. Turner Shoemaker Theater (at the Knox School, 541 Long Beach Road, St. James, 11780). Information and tickets at: lighthousetheatrecompany.com
