What inspires you as an artist/entrepreneur … and how does it correlate to your decision making when choosing venues, festivals, performance runs, etc.
I am inspired by authentic stories about people and groups that have been under represented and/or have not had their stories accurately told. This truth informs the stories and people I am drawn too. My latest work features two Latina women in the leading roles because they represent one of the aforementioned “forgotten” groups
How does independent theater play into realizing ultimate goals?
It has been a great laboratory and testing ground for me. It’s a great way to learn the craft from the ground up and I totally love it!
About Mr. D’s musical:
One in a Million, a rousing new musical joining the Off-Broadway skyline this November, brings us a little spirituality, a little drama, a little humor, and a lot of joyous music and fun. Friendship, acceptance, status, and love are just a few themes peppering the production. We start with a little spirituality: “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” (1 Timothy 6:9) and bring that to modern-day NYC.
We’re invited to the home of Wanda and Suzy Velez for their annual Christmas party for members of their church. This year, the festivity turns out to be an arena to test their convictions and reveal secrets about themselves. As the story unfolds, each character – no matter how righteous they profess to being – succumbs to temptation. Without careful consideration of the consequences, they all throw caution to the wind and find themselves gambling. One in a Million shows us the avenues the almighty dollar can stake us down.
Aside from riches, sometimes it all about trying to fit in. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his soul?” (Mark 18:36).
Join us to see who wins.
